Mixed feelings about this. We must wait for the result of the trial to be fair. Will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Since the Republicans failed to do their job, Alaskans will have to vote Democratic to bring Stevens to justice.

I'm sure he is just as guilty of taking brides as most other politicians probably are. It won't change in any near future elections, because the voting majority in this country is not educated in who they are voting for. TV ads are not enough to go on when electing a politician, but I'm afraid that is how most are basing their voting decisions.

Actually, lovetrust, that under-the-table business is how most things get accomplished in D.C. I don't condone it, but I can't change it, either. We'll see if this all "changes" when the CHANGE party takes over in January, eh?

Not likely for that even if they do get in. Did you get a load of the lobbyist's parties going on in Denver? They were BIG, they were well attended, they were dripping with $$$, and funny, they were EXACTLY what candidate Obama said he was AGAINST.

Don't look for CHANGE in his administration.

Republicans tend to vote for their own people regardless of what they do. Even though most of the National Debt has been signed for by Republican presidents, the Republicans still drone on with the myth that they are fiscally conservative. And the Republican "base" acts like a bunch of sheep.

"I don't condone it, but I can't change it..." If we all take this position, it will not change. There are ways to enforce corrective actions. One would be to have members of Congress "audited" by an outside organization with subpoena powers;" currently the internal ethics committees are not effective since they are more likely to cover my friends ass (CMFA). Something else that might be good is to make them follow the same laws that they actually pass; currently members of Congress don't have to follow things like equal opportunity or equal pay.

Suite Judy points out that there are lots of lobbyists in Denver, but we should also remember how many lobbyists were at the Republican convention in Miami and will be at the Republican convention in the "Twin Cities." There will be at least as many lobbyists there, if not more. No matter where you go, if you are holding a juicy sweet piece of melon, you are going to attract flys and gnats.

So I continue to maintain that both parties are largely made up of self-serving crooks. And short of some sort of grass-roots mutiny, which I'm not for, it all ain't about to change down in D.C. Politicians are all pretty much from the same mold.

Just another example of Americans re-electing incumbents at a 95% rate, no matter what they do. Even without this indictment this guy should have been finished. This isn't a party thing, because both parties do it year in and year out. It still amazes me that some of the senior incumbents who are so old, whose better days are behind them and they should be in retirement, keep getting re-elected as well. This won't be the first crook to be re-elected.

In this case Stevens, regardless of wrongdoing, proven or unproven is an institution in Alaska. He would have to do a lot more than that to lose his primary. Now we'll see what happens in November. In any case, I think it will be beneficial for Democrats that he won.

Just a comment to everyone who is saying that the LA representative Jefferson was not punished at all: He was stripped of his committee chairmanship. Its up the primary and electorate voters to vote him out of office. Just as it was in Alaska. However, incumbency and voting tendencies are very strong within the parties.

Actually Democrats have been making inroads in local leadership (mayor, etc) for a while. And when Senator Stevens is convicted and sent to jail right before the election, even the Republican base will not turn out for him.

When it comes to a con, these guys make used car salesmen look like amateurs. Forget the current scandal this guy's in the middle of, all you need to know about him is one of his many extravagantly useless pet projects called "the multi-million dollar bridge to nowhere". I don't know who's doing the voting in the state of Alaska, but they need to snap out of their coma and see this man for who he really is. Re-electing him to office is like hiring Raffaello Follieri to manage your money (if you don't know who he is, read a newspaper).

The " bridge to nowhere " wasn't a Stevens project. That was Don Young over in the House of Representatives. And the whole thing came about because Murkowski, the governor , had ties to the area. Tying the airport to the town was never the real issue, it was a huge land speculation deal and you'll never guess who the first people in line were. Anyway, the money still got appropriated and spent, just not on the bridge. Between the time Young got the money and actual delivery, we got a new governor who was from up north, so the dough went up there. That's the thing people in the lower 48 don't appreciate, if it benefits Alaska, it's ok. Seniority helps the state so much, the only way people like Young and Murkowski and Stevens leave office is if the Feds tie them up and physically carry them to prison.

It's hard for me to believe the average Alaska resident cares if Stevens is corrupt. I lived there 22 years and the practice of favors for the big dogs is an accepted part of everyday life. There's a real " us versus them " mentality in the entire state and as long as Don Young and Ted Stevens have breath in their bodies, they'll be hard to defeat. Sort of reminiscent of Lyndon Johnson's comment about some dictator the U S was promoting " sure he's a son of a bitch, but he's OUR son of a bitch ".

Maybe when the old geezer is sitting in his cell, like that is going to happen, he could write his memoirs.
Maybe call it "A Bridge Too Far".
And what's up with that slimeball mayor in Detroit?

What the hell is the matter with you Republican Alaskans? Are your brains frozen? You had a chance to take a righteous stand, vote for Stevens' REPUBLICAN opponent in the primary, and save the damn seat in the Senate. Now you might just as well stay home on election day when it comes to that race because he is surely not going to win.

                                          FOOLS!!!

This is hilarious. This mans delegates are stupid. There I said it. If it were just the popular vote it might be excusable, but his interested parties see fit to keep him in the seat. Dumb as rocks, I tell ya...

Actually Linda it's a tie between Stevens and Kennedy as to who's the biggest crook. (but really I'm not supposed to say that about Kennedy because he might be dying you know and he's family is famous, so we're supposed to pretend that he was ALWAYS pure and righteous.)

Until our citizens cry out for term limits we will continue to see this type of behavior. Be they Republican or Democrat, they think they are above the law after decades in Washington. Two terms max!

The problem is that the Senate would have to write the law for senate terms limits and then vote themselves out of office. I'm not waiting for the cows to come home on this one.
